I really don't know. you could try to put it together the opposite of what you have now. Won't hurt anything to try that.
I did. When I put the disc on the other valve the system default to blowing out of the defrost vents. I honestly think that is where it was originally, towards the front of the truck. If that's true then I believe my solenoid is bad, but I'll have to learn how to test it by the directions Tom sent. I'm just trying to verify the correct location of the plastic disc.
I really don't understand the operation of the valves in this solenoid, it may be giving enough vacuum periodically to engage the hubs, but if it is not producing enough vacuum to disengage the hubs then that may be my issue
Well, I called the Ford dealership and had him pull a new solenoid off the shelf and open the top cap. He advised once opened and the connector facing him the valve on the left(like picture above) should be the one that is covered. On mine, the valve on the right is covered, which is incorrect.
Yesterday, when I switched the disc to the valve on the left, which is the correct placement, my vents default to the defrost vents, which means I have a leak somewhere.
Hell....it took me two days just to figure out I had the little disc on the wrong side. At this rate, the truck will be an antique when I get this issue fixed.
A BIG thank you to whitetmw(Tom) for sending me a known good solenoid. He wouldn't even let me pay shipping. This solenoid was installed today and my 4x4 problems are solved. Auto ESOF system works perfectly, both shifting in and out of 4WD.
Thank you again Tom. Reps given!!!!!!!!!!!
Also thank you to those that gave me advice in determining that my solenoid was the issue.
