I have just purchased a 1963 F100 which will be in my garage by the end of the week, and wanted to ask a question about the door tag, I am familiar with door tags as I also own a 1966 Mustang.
The door tag on my F100 is missing the letter for the colour, the body is currently in primer (gold) and the only place I can see some original colour is the fire wall, directly behind the engine, the colour looks like it could be viking blue, but as the colour is faded and not in good condition, it could be something all together different.
The door tag numbers on the second line are, in order of appearance are,
W.B. 114, Color (Blank), Model F100, Body 81A, Trans F, Axle A2,
Any help would be appreciated, also, if there is a link to a decoder, that would be great.
welcome. There are people here that will decode this for you. Post the top line as well or a picture of the plate. There are blues but I never heard of Viking.
Anyway, welcome to the site
Scott
Welcome to FTE. The absence of an entry in the color spot usually means that a special order color or color scheme was specified, and is usually accompanied by a five digit entry in the DSO (Domestic Special Order) block. So even though there were three colors of blue listed for Ford trucks in the '63 model year (I'm including turquoise which some people don't think is blue), your probable special order status may mean that your truck was painted a different color. Unfortunately, the information to decode what your DSO number means (if you have one), is no longer available. The first two digits of a DSO represent the District Sales Office city from where your truck was ordered. The last three digits can no longer be decoded. Provide the rest of the information on your warranty plate and someone from this site will happily decode it for you. That's the best way to get accurate information as unfortunately many/most links and vendor catalogs have errors in the information they provide. Hope this helps!
As I am a newly joined member I am unable to provide attachments, but the information on the plate under the DSO reads as follows:
721290
As provided by SuperSabre, the last three digits provide the color as it was a special order.
As provided by Conserve, there is some color in places, although the dash is painted in a brown, as is the rest of the interior metal, I hope the truck wasn't painted in brown??, I did find some blue on the firewall, with original primer under it, so hopefully that is the color, were trucks painted with a different color for interiors?
SuperSabre's info is wrong inre to DSO code. If a Domestic Special Order, DSO code contains SIX digits, not five. If not a Domestic Special Order, code only contains two digits.
No COLOR code stamped on the Warranty Plate: Truck painted a non standard color per the original purchasers request. When this occurs, the truck is a Domestic Special Order.
The absence of an entry in the color spot means that a non standard color was specified, and is accompanied by a SIXdigit DSO code.
The first two digits of a DSO represent the District Sales Office city/state from where your truck was ordered. The last FOUR digits refer to a Domestic Special Order.
I am guessing, as is the case with Mustangs, that information from Ford prior to 67 is not available.
And also trying to find out the special order color?
There is no way to discover what color the truck was painted originally, because FoMoCo THREW AWAY all the records (including those that pertain to Domestic Special Orders) decades ago.
Thanks NumberDummy, that is pretty much what I thought, my truck is currently in primer, by the previous owner, who did a quick and dirty job by the way, I am lucky there are some spots on the truck that have the original color.
One more question, was it a norm to have a different color on the interior cabin metal, than the outside of the truck?
Cheers, and appreciate you answering my numpty questions.
On 1963's, the BODY code only refers to the body style. 1964/66, the body code decodes to the color and type of seat material and the body style.
There's no way to determine what seat upholstery colors were used in 1963's...unless its still present and someone has a 1963 Ford Truck Soft Trim catalog.
Then, the seat material can be compared to the colored swatches in this catalog...which I happen to have.
I once owned a 1965 F100 Standard Cab, exterior/interior color was Wimbledon White, the seat material, steering wheel/column was blue.
What color is your steering wheel and column?
Did you buy this truck in Oz, or in the USA, then had it shipped to Down Under?
I Bought the truck here in OZ, actually picked it up from a guy living in the next town.
The Truck steering wheel is black as is the column. Can you decipher the VIN for me? it is:
F10JR381108
A previous owner imported it, it was not in Oz originally. 'ANZAC' trucks have a different VIN, Warranty Plate and codes stamped thereon than US trucks, also have RHD
Your truck was assembled at and ordered from San Jose CA
F10 = F100 2WD / J = 223 1V I-6 / R = San Jose CA Assembly Plant / 381108 = 1963, assembled February 1963.
1961/63 F100/250 2WD Standard Cabs came with a 3 spoke 17" diameter black steering wheel. Custom Cabs were available with this black wheel or a white steering wheel.
