There were quite a few differences and running changes in the early and later Y blocks. I'm not a Y expert, but they may not even physically interchange. I do know a cam designed for a 239 would not be very efficient in a 292, way under cammed. To the contrary, a 292 cam in a 239 would be more like a hi perf type. Factory cams especially are truly designed to be used best for the specific application.
Regardless of the source, the external dimensions of all Ford Y-Blocks are the same. Any year exhaust manifold will bolt to any year head. Flywheels and bellhousings are interchangeable, along with timing covers and crankshaft dampers. There are some parts specific to the 1954 EBU 239 engines. These include the fuel pump, water pump, oil pump, distributor, cam bearings and camshaft. From 1955 until the end of production in 1964, parts can be easily interchanged. - See more at: Identifying Ford Y-Block Parts (Part 1) Precision Engine
According to my Motors manual, valve lift for a 239 cam was .331, and the 292 was .358. Oddly, the 272 had around .400 lift............just some trivia.
No other specs were given, I'd assume there may be other differences.
