What makes you say this? I have a printout of the test procedure the shop used, and it has the part number on it.

The part # is 3C3Z-2C286-AARM. I can look Ford parts up. They are correct in telling you the part is obsolete.

I don't know how this all worked out, but I can tell you from experience (at least on my 2001 4x4) that there were TWO different ABS Hydraulic Control Units (HCU) used by the factory, different part numbers and completely different plumbing layout. They are not interchangeable.

I didn't see the diagnosis listed in the post above but the symptoms of a bad HCU are (all at the same time):

1. ABS light on
2. Check Engine light on
3. Overdrive indicator on gear selector flashing
4. No cruise control

I first tried changing the speed sensor but then hunted it down to the actual ABS HCU. It's located under the driver's side battery and a real PIA to access. Mine works when it's cold out but as soon as the brake fluid warms up it quits as soon as I shut off the engine, even with a quick restart. And no, they are simply not available anywhere new or rebuilt (that I could find). Seems like a good business opportunity :-)

I have two of the wrong units to prove there are two different versions/part numbers. These were both from 2001 4x4 diesel Excursions. And both don't match mine.

I'll post the two different part numbers once I get my bad unit out. I'm lazy and have lived with it for a couple of years. The biggest issue is no overdrive, so in the end I could have probably paid for a new one just in saved fuel, had a new unit been available from Ford. If you found a new unit, consider yourself very fortunate.

As an aside, I get a lot of used Excursion parts from Custom Autos by Tim in Guthrie, OK.

Tim does stretch conversions mating a 201x F-Series to an Excursion back half, so in effect you get a brand new Excursion (or a six-door conversion which is what we ordered). Check his web site--amazing work. Looks completely factory. Beautiful body work and pretty amazing workmanship. His wiring guy is incredible.

Anyway, Tim has more wrecked Excursion chassis/bodies than any place else in the country (I'm talking acres and acres) and if he doesn't have what you need he'll know who to call.

I have no affiliation with Tim other than being a very happy customer. I flew to OKC to pick up the stretched Excursion and spent a couple of days with these guys. Terrific people. Can't say enough good things about them. Scott is the parts guy....see contact info below.

As for the ABS HCU, pull the battery and fender skirt and take a pic of the actual part number before ordering a used replacement or you risk getting the wrong one--like me :-)

Man, I hate when I forget to put one of my own threads to rest!

I installed the HCU I ordered and everything has been fine since.

On a side note, the only symptom my truck had was that the brake pedal would be nice and firm at first, then as it was held down (such as at a red light) it would slowly go to the floor.
