System Upgrade

I am currently running 4 5x7 speakers off a 400W, 4 Channel Kenwood amp. I want to add 2 Rockford Fosgate RFP4210 subs (Dual coil, 400W RMS, 4 Ohm) that will run off a second 2 channel Amp.

What specs Do I need for the 2 channel amp to run the two RFP4210?
What type of installation kit do I need for this?
Should I consider a capacitor?
What other considerations should I be thinking of?
Anybody have any install instructions for this?

capacitor=no good. just a bandaid for a elect charging problem. skip them and save the $$.

id look into a mono channel amp, at least 600W RMS to power the woofers. how much u have to spend on an amp? as for an install kit, go to wal-mart and pick up the largest kit (it comes with a dist. block for the power wires and a whole bunch of goodies). to install it, just run the thicker power wire from the battery into the dist block then from the dist block into the amps with the smaller guage wire. its basically just like wiring a single amp but double the wiring and such.

You'll need an amp that makes the power you seek at 1 or 4 ohms. I would go with a Class D mono amp (or a Class T 2 channel amp...like Avionixx) over a traditional A/B amp due to the current load the class A/B might put on your elec. system. Power at 4 ohms will be more expensive than 1 ohm, so try to pick up an amp that does 800ish watts *rms* at 1 ohm.

A couple of good amps that will do the trick...at a reasonable price.

JBL 600.1 or the 1200.1 (about $75 difference)

Hold on now,.......... do you allready have those subs or is some one giving them to you? Not to talk you out of them but you do have sub choices also. What kind of bass are you after? Do you want to go ported or sealed?

I already have the subs. They're good enough for my needs. I'm not trying to blow my windows out, just want some bump to go with my music. I have a sealed box for two tens that will fit under the back bench of my F-150. The box has seperate compartments for each sub which have the recommended volume for the subs. I am just trying to figure out the best amp that will give me optimum performance for what I already have. And I made a mistake. The subs I have are Rockford Fosgate Punch HE RFP3410 (Single Voice Coil, 200W RMS, 4Ohm). I've been told to run the subs off a mono amp on the 2 Ohm level and wire the subs in parallel. What do you all think?

Alright, wire the subs positives together and connect to the positive of the amp. Then wire the negatives together, and wire to negative on amp. This will give you the desired 2 ohm final load. 400-500 watts, rms, at 2 ohms is a little easier to find.

You might want to look at thezeb.com and grab one of the US Acoustics USX600D amps. They're $158, and do a slightly underrated 375 watts at 2 ohms (more than enough to get those RF's bumpin' good). Your box is probably a tad on the small side, so run up to Walmart and buy some polyfill (basically, pillow stuffing). Put about .75 lbs. per chamber. The JBL 600.1 would also work. It's about $40 more, and gives about 300 extra watts. You probably don't need the extra power, but it's always nice The US Acoustics should suit you fine, though.

I've never heard of putting polyfill in a chamber. Then again, car audio isn't totally my bag, baby. That's why I'm here asking questions. What does the polyfill do?

Polyfill slows the rear wave down and fools the woof into thinking it's in a bigger box. Normally, I advise building the box the correct size. If, however, the box is prebuilt, or you just plain don't have the room, polyfill is a cheap solution.
