lower steering shaft

hi
i was trying to replace the lower steering shaft on my 98 e-250. at the u joints the bolts apparently thread into the housing and have a nut on the other side. does anyone know the size of this nut, i tried metric and sae but nothing seems to fit it. after more careful inspection it doesn't seem to be a regular nut. more like a 4 sided nut with clipped corners. of course they are in spots that are difficult to see well. i have the same situation where the shat connects to the upper u joint. would an 8 pt socket work here. thanks for the help im sure it is something simple im just missing

4 sided with clipped corners should be kind of a speed nut thing that may be spot welded in place. but if they start spinning around I use an open ended wrench or channel locks to hold it in place.........or

on my replacement shaft the bolt threads thru the u joint as i believe the original does also. this nut must be there as a safety measure to prevent the bolt from ever backing out. im going to pick up some replacement bolts from ford so that might make things clearer when i can see them.
