rag joint

I have a 69 f100 and the rag joint went out. I went to autozone and bought the disc, but I cna't figure out how to get the old one off. I have the column seperated at the joint but I can't get the old disc out. I have room to work so I don't think I need to pull out any major pieces. How do you guys usually do this job.
thanks for any help

There's a bolt and nut that crimps the neck of the coupler onto the steering gear shaft. all you have to do is loosen the nut on the coupler enough to slide the assembly off the steering gear. You might not be able to see the nut for brake lines and other hoses, etc.

Good Luck.

If you can not see the nut and bolt, just turn the steering wheel.

I just did this to my 69 a couple weeks ago. You need to remove the coupler (rag joint) from the truck. There are two bolts that hold the coupler to the steering shaft and one clamp bolt that holds it to the gear box. I had to loosen the steering column to get the room to remove the coupler. The two 1/2" pins are rivited thou the rag disc and have to be drilled out to change the rag. The rebuild kit I got from Schucks auto supply had replacments for them that bolt on. There is also a ground strap in the coupler that I had to replace I think it is for the horn.Good luck
P.S Ford Dealer still offers the couplers brand new $80

Be sure to get everything tight and check it multiple times. I was a moron and didn't look again after I got it done, well there was a little bit of play in the joint and it wore away the top flange on the column to the point where I had to replace the column. This was on a 67, though.
