I start my truck up after a wire replacement and I hear what I think is the bearings in the altenator (reman. put in 1 month ago) going bad. I just happened to look under the truck after shutting off the engine and there is the altenator pully star washer and nut on the floor. Obviously the nut/washer was rattling prior to falling off. I'm really glad it happened in the barn and not on the hyway. You got to love some of the workmanship out there!
NAPA parts man said I have to use an impact gun to set the nut as the nut is all that holds the pully tight. He said there is not a flat shoulder on the altenator shaft/pully helping to lock the pully from turning. Also there is not way to effectively hold the alternator shaft and hand tighten with a ratchet. He said I'll never get it tight enough without using the impact gun.
To use the impact I have to remove the altenator - not enough room between the altenator and the fan shroud. Any way to do this without pulling the altenator?
If you have an offset wrench, the middle of the shaft should have a hex key hole in it, that will hold it while you tighten the nut, if the threads are not already damaged. Otherwise, if the hex hole is not there, then it will be difficult to tighten effectively without the impact. Unless you changed the pulley, it should have been tight from the reman shop though.
A couple of wrenches and 10 min, and I can have an alternator swapped out in a parking lot on one of these trucks. Pull the dang thing and tighten the nut with an impact, it's the only way to go. You're gonna spend more time beating your head against the wall with any other method, so you may as well just pull it and do it right.
10 min! You can be my mechanic! Took me 3 days of soaking the pivot bolt with PB Blaster and a 3 foot cheater bar to get the original one off. I put antiseize on the bolt when I put the new altenator on so it really shouldn't be too bad.
What's your rig? Both of mine run/ran a serpentine belt, so the alternator is a couple bolts and a wiring harness or two. Although, I thankfully haven't had to pull the 3G alternator in the '93 yet. Once I put the DuraCrap alt from AutoZombie in my '90, changing the alternator was a once-a-year affair. At least it was free.

Thanks for the tips.
3 days, 2 cans of WD40, and then said screw it, pulled the rad and went to work with the impact gun, took the impact gun 10 mins just to get the pivot free.
took me 45 mins to put everything back together, new coolant, those damn cooling lines for the Trans are a pain in the ***, and ant-seize on the pivot and top nut as well.
hey i've encountered this problem numerous times. undo the two screws holding the shroud on. move it slightly (it will just hang on the fan). use a swivel and a short socket on the nut. tighten it with the belt on and you should be able to get it plenty tight enough. these nuts are also designed to lock.
