B2 V8 overheating problems
I cooked my first motor fried all the bearings and 2 pistons I can't afford for this to happen again.
Details the rad has been flushed I upgrade to a larger fan
Could this just be plugged thermostat?
This is how it runs I can run it for 20 minutes then she gets really hot I have 33 inche tires on with 3:58s and a 24X18 Rab 2 row coper I can not upgrade do to space, unless I buy a alluminum are they really that much better?
My plan is to add a extra electric fan, replace the bottom rad hose, thermostat and maybe the water pump any tips out there?
thanks,
v8tyler
Yes, on my 2.9 I went with a radiator from Modine that I bought at NAPA. The NAPA guy swore with this single core aluminum it would cool my truck better than a 2 core copper because I wanted a 3 core Aerostar radiator. You know what, it did. I could never get my truck over 180 again
Only bad thing is my warranty card came back saying Modine was out of business. You probably have a 302/AT combo. The C-4 requires more cooling than the 2.9 and the 302 requires more cooling than the 2.9.
I would change the thermostat (make sure the one you put in works before you install it), the cap, and make sure your fan shroud is intact. Most likely you do not have one since people leave them off when doing the V-8 conversions. That will make a HUGE difference.
imo 212 is the max. you should run just about any gas engine, 200 is the upper limit for me, I prefer to keep my engines at 190.
Are you suppose to run a lower or high pound cap at 6,000 feet and are you suppose to change the antifreeze mixure?
The other thing I would seriously consider is if the MAF sensor is calibrated correctly. If not, it will effect the engine and how lean it will run, which will determine how hot the engine gets.
Your transmission cooler sits off to the right side, outside the direct air path. It is not big enough for a C-4. I would upgrade to a 24000 GVW (about 12x4x2 with four coil loops). You might want to move the stock one so it sits directly in front of the fan in the middle of the radiator. It will require drilling a few holes and bending some new line, but, worth it.
How was the radiator flushed? was it taken apart and dipped by a radiator shop? if not, it may be partially clogged.
I would inspect the bottom hose, it could be sucking shut if it doesn't have a spring in it. This will restrict flow to the engine.
Does water circulate thru the radiator when checking it with the cap off? the pump could have a bad impeller.

I'm gonna buy a new bottom hose thermostat and water pump.
The rad is like almost new before it started overheating it had the 5 year coolant then I switched to the green stuff.
Think a Alluminum rad will keep the 302 cool with a 12 inche hayden puller fan?I'm super limited to space.
I'm also running sythetic oil 10/30 what do must people run for 302?
Thanks everybody for the info it truly helps
