I have an '87 F350 4x4 with a 6.9 diesel,3 speed trans. When cold,it takes a few minutes to engage after I put it in gear. Is this a sign that the torque converter is on its way out? Thanks for any ideas.

Most likely is that the seals in the forward clutch have hardened and don't seal til they warm up a little. The fix is probably an OH.

Thanks for the help-now I know what to expect for when I pull the trans.BTW, I've been told its a c3. I thought it would be a c6,never heard of a c3. Thanks again.

The C3 was a miniature version of the C6. It was used on small cars like the Pinto. Ford added an overdrive and it became the A4LD.

Doh.....I suppose mines a c6 then. Its got 17 bolts on the pan with a notch out of one corner.I thought a c3 was maybe a bizarre metric version of the c6. Thanks for clearing that up,rclarke.
