I'm going to be needing new tires soon, i'd like to get ones a little bigger than the stock ones. I forget off the top of my head what the size of the stock ones are, but you can bet they are the smallest ford could get away with on the truck.
I don't plan on doing any off roading, mainly city/highway driving. What would be a good size tire and brand for a non lifted truck for that kind of driving?
stock should be 235/75/15s...which are a 29 inch tire i believe. A good pick would be 31/10.5/15s.
Primary rig is NOW TOTALLED :-X23 :
95' F-150 EB 300/6 5 spd with 4" Superlift, MSD, Ram Air, Gibson Exhaust, 32" BFG Muds

Then theres:
88' F-250 Superduty 351 + c6
95' Mercury Cougar 4.6L V-8
80' E-350 300/6 and a
3 spd column shifter. Top speed, 65mph, Go Baby Go!
The newest addition to the Ford family is a 99' Mustang GT 4.6L
A good compromise between the two, also, would be 30" X 9.50R15's. They wouldn't cut into your gearing (and acceleration) quite as badly as the 31's, would clear the 2WD front end easier, and would fit the stock rims a bit easier while being slightly larger than the 235's. There are a lot of brand / tread choices in any of the sizes, though. I'm partial to BFG A/T's, but since you don't plan to off-road, something in an all-season (versus all terrain) might be more appropriate and less noisy. I haven't cared for Firestone since long before the Wilderness issue (I saw a Firestone AT blow out and completely dissolve at 45 mph once), but there are many other good choices out there. Just my $0.02.....
If you want to have a good looking tire that fills the wheel well, go with the 31s, you'll like it. 30s are only an inch bigger than 235s in diameter, which will only be a 1/2 an inch all around. With 31s, you will hardly notice a power difference. I put 32s on my truck and there isn't that much of a difference. 31s fit on the rim and will fit on a 4x2 just fine. You might have slight rubbing with the wheel turned lock to lock, but thats not a big deal at all. Don't forget that you need to recalibrate the speedometer for a larger tire size so that the ABS brakes will work correctly. Also, the speedo will be a few mph off, causing the odometer to be off as well.

hey fiend. i have an 88 f250 HD. i did quite a bit of research on the net looking at peoples comments/reviews on tires and decided on the Michelin LTX M/S. they come highly recommended. i stayed with the stock size for my vehicle. i do a lot of towing/hauling and have camper. i went with the load rating "E" i think. i am happy with them after a year. they were not cheap but after blow-out on the cheap HANKOOK tires that came with the truck (had a camper onthe truck and was going around a corner) i didn't want to mess around. they are a good tire. they don't look that rugged though but are good on the hwy, rain, snow etc.
I've got Bridgestone Dueler A/T's and am totally satisfied. Aggressive looking with no noise and good snow traction. Plus, they are S speed rated for highway driving. Dunlop Rover A/T would be my second choice. A little less aggressive and less expensive. Unless cost is a real concern, I would stay away from Korean tires for now.
As for size, the 31-10.50's look good, but if you have gearing under 3.55, don't do it, you'll loose too much power. I went for 255/70-15 to keep the same diameter as stock, but get a bigger footprint. If looks are a primary factor, I would go with the 31's.
You will need to have your spedometer/ABS re-calibrated.
I have an 89 F150 4X2 that had stock tires on American Racing 15's. I went to the 31X10.50's and absolutly love it. I have had no problem with rub so far. It has barely affected the gas mileage, and the speedo actually is accurate now. (I belive the guy I bought the truck on had changed the gear for the speedo to work right with 31's then went back to smaller tires) Plus, it gives the truck a little lift, fills the fender wells good, and gives the truck a beefier look. I would definitly go with the 31's!!!
