Replacement radio

I have a standard AM radio in my 79 F-100, and would like to upgrade to at least AM/FM, that or AM/FM CD. I would prefer not to do any metal cutting. Does anyone know where I could start looking for this?
Thanks.

Without cutting you won't get a CD player in the radio spot.

You can get AM/FM radio stereo's or AM/FM Cassette

Thank goodness your not a sawsall junkie . Thats what the previous owner on my truck used to put in a cd player. Luckily, he didnt get the metal dash, i just had to replace the plastic bezel. I put a am/fm cassatte in a 79 I had back in 84 without cutting anything, just had to make my own strap hanger in the back of the unit. Your local stereo shops should have something that will fit without maiming your Ford.

I had cut mine years ago, and installed an AM/FM CD stereo. It will work, but you do have to cut the radio/heater control bracket, and then fab up a lower support for the heater controls. I've seen people do it without supporting the heater controls, but I felt better having a support piece in place.
It really isn't that bad, and it doesn't have to be permanent. you can buy the radio / heater support bracket on e-bay for about 8 bucks, that way you'll have it in case you ever want to go back to the shaft mount radio.
OR:
They make shaft mount cassette radios that have CD changer controls in them, and then put the changer behind the seat.

Classic auto sound has units that will fit without any cutting. I have one with remote cd changer control for my 72 mustang that I am very happy with. Their catalog lists mid 70's trucks as an application.

Crutchfield has a Kenwood tapedeck (dual **** type) that will fit in with zero cutting.

Any 2 **** radio/cassette will fit the hole and then you can attach a cd changer. Or if you go to any local radio install shop they should have an under dash mount for a DIN style cd player. The under dash kit will require you to put a couple of screw holes in the underdash metal though.

I worked in the Circuit City car stereo installation shop years ago when in college. We put a bunch of the under dash kits in. But for those that wanted the stereo mounted in the dash the 2 **** versions fit fine. Did a bunch of classic mustang installs with the 2 knobbers. As mentioned above Kenwood makes several nice ones.

you know I cut mine and it was not a problem but if you really want a nice cd/am/fm radio you could take the mount that comes with the stereo and bolt it under the dash by the ash tray. then all you have to do is rip out the am radio that you have and put a piece of black plastic over the hole I have done this in a friends truck and it looked very professional.
