That ought to be a one-of-a-kind! Welcome aboard and set up your gallery as soon as you can. I know there are a bunch of folks here who would love to see pictures and ask/answer questions.
The guys and gals on this forum have quite a history of giving each other tweaks. Don't let the good-natured jabs fool you - this group gets along and helps each other out about as well as any dysfunctional family does. There will probably be references to things from the past like "girly 302s", "the man who knew too many IFSs", "the man with the exhaust pipe carburetor", and such that you won't understand. If you're really interested, you can scan the archives or ask and somebody would certainly love to tell the history over again.
And always remember ... uh ... I can't remember. But anyway, welcome aboard.
Welcome to FTE shagg!! You should like it here. I want to hear more about your swap! Fender's a perkins diesel is fairly popular engine. Perkins are used alot in tractors and heavy equipment.
I'm not sure if they have any special designs or performance specs but I'm sure shagg would love to tell us more P.S where in ohio are you from? -4speed

Hiya Shagg, welcome aboard. At one time I had pondered putting a diesel in my truck if I got tired of the flathead... interested to hear how your truck turns out!
well right now it`s getting everything together and ready!! the perkins is a 354cu inch turbocharged straight six it`s close in size to the cummins 5.9 ,, its not a power house 110 hp nat 125 turboed but with a little head and blower work more is there if needed i know it sounds low in hp but this thing pulls strong snapping a dana 70 yolk off clean is a little too easy if the clutch is accidently popped ,, the perk came from a massey 510 combine in the 70`s and still running great its wore out 3 trans broke several rear axles and a few sets front wheel bearings my old setup was using international 5 spd`s trans or industrial pattern but i lucked out and found a factory bell for automotive use,, dodge used perkins in a few 500 thru 700 trucks called pd`s {perkins diesel} so i drilled and tapped the bell so no more slow hard shifting 5 spd`s but im worried if the 4spd`s will be tough enough so might still stick with the big trannies the frame im using is going to be a international straight truck frame that way i can just roll the rear axle to the wheel base i want and cut off the extra the front and rear axles are old military rockwells with 20" rims since my old ford has the big fenders everything should fit fine going to keep the dual wheels in the rear ,, plans for onboard air and welder too ,, thats it for the truck as for me im 33yr old country boy born and raised in a little town called gallipolis ohio ,, south east corner of the state married 6 kids 5 boys 1 girl so things are always hopping around here !! sorry so long but thats the big game plan just getting everything blasted ,,painted and ready will take a while ,, thanks for checking out my plans !!
Wow! That beast of a truck your building sounds cool! The engine sounds like a torque king!!! Keep us posted and feel free to post as many questions as you can come up with!! -4speed
Shagg; Welcome to FTE ! I once had a 6-354 Perkins in my Clam-Boat,that I used on the Chesapeake Bay to catch (hard clams). It is a sturdy engine.Thay were built in England, origionally a Bus engine. Be careful some threads are not metric, not american, but some kind of english thread. The marine engines were 120hp. (natural) 160hp.(turbo) @3450 rpm. But they are very heavy in weight.Maybe 10 or 12 years ago, Perkins got bought by Detriot Diesel/Penski and not soon after dropped most of the origonal Perkins engines and parts. If you have trouble locating parts let me know I have a few outlets yet available to me in Virigina. Jim VA.
well guys here`s a update ,, got the 78 international straight frame truck home,, a mile tooooo long but real easy to move the rear axle in and wack off the extra ,, thinking about leaving the international front straight axle and rear end axle under it, these look like pretty heavy units ,, try to post pics sometime but right now everything pretty much just looks like junk ,,, oh sorry bout the alt help title it was supposed to be 51 ford newbie checking in guess it got crossed up with my alt post in wiring
Shagg,
Welcome to FTE! That sounds like an awsome project you have started. I sat behind one of those same engines as a young boy, driving my father's MF1100 tractor and eating some of the finest dust Kansas had to offer! Spent a some time in an MF750 combine that had a turbo Perkins, too, but it had a cab and AC!Oh, the good ol days!
Good luck and get some pictures in your gallery as soon as you get a chance.
ok guys got some pics in the gallery but remember NO snickering so loud that i can hear ya in ohio,,
ok pulled the old truck out today alot rougher than i thought broken drivers window ,,bottom of both doors are gone ,, looks like im gonna need fenders, doors, hood, and thanks to the broken window ,,floor pans.
the truck is a f4 anyone know where to get parts for these?
my dad owned this truck for as long as i can remember , it has a old 390 4spd with a BIG tulsa winch on the back hauled a bunch of cars on the old girl time to give her a facelift .
im not up on the f4 i thought about just cutting down the orig frame but it looks like the frame bows in the middle under the cab were these made this way or has she just packed too much wieght in the past? thanks for the help guys oh one more thing anyone know how to get the thread title changed? i wrote admin but hasnt been changed yet still says alt help instead of 51 ford newbie
Ain't nobody gonna laugh. Least not to your face. Heck we got a guy in here that uses a big late 50's delivery van for a daily driver and babe picker-upper.
So what's the plan here? Angle or flat deck for carrying a trailer queen 34 Ford coupe or 54 F100 to rod runs? Or a rolling billboard for your own business?
34 coupe now that would be sweet!!!!! babes hmmmm thats a thought but naaaa better not my wife might get the truck in court,, no ohio laws are really tough lifted trucks and now they can pull ya over to check if you have a seat belt on or not , seems like anymore you need a permit to pick your nose and now their trying to enforce the no tags no car deal here and i live in the boonies so i thought why not fix the old 51 it`s not 100% orig or rare and rougher than a cob and being a f4 dont think they can grump about the height,, too old for smog junk so they cant say anything bout the diesel and with the large fenders and 20" rims 48" military tires everything should go together good and look great!! when finished of course that is if i ever find any body parts
