Stupid phone won't let me search. If I park the truck facing downhill at night starts right up in the morning. Well I'm parked downhill now and after sitting a couple hours won't start. I drained my batteries trying to reprime it. 93 f250. Just added an electric pump to assist with priming but would like to fix the right way. Need all the help I can get with this one.
Sounds like you need to replace you return lines. From what you describe it's a classic case of air intrusion. Replace the return lines and you should be good to go.
Mine just did this, but when it was colder it was fine, but when it warmed up my fuel filter leaked, so I just had to tighten the fuel filter about a 1/4 turn,
by down hill, how big of a hill do you mean? are the fuel tanks higher than the motor?
are you certin the glows are working...and the return line on the ip has a check valve if it is dirty or not not sealing fuel can draw away from the ip, this is the only way it would not try to start, (if the ip is not going bad) if the glows are sometimes not working it will crank and not start. you must plug in the block heater and try, if it starts right up it is a glow plug problem. not air intrusion.
Yes overnight the tanks are higher than the motor. Fires right up no problem after being parked like this. Go somewhere and it will start and die within seconds. Last few times this has happened needed to get a jump to get enough spin time to reprime. Crack the injector and definitely no fuel there...think i will get a return kit and start there cant go without the truck for too long and cant always get a jump or leave the truck running when out.
Jesse, remove your supply line at the lift pump and run it to a 5 gallon can full of diesel fuel. Let it sit for a few hours or over night and see youre still losing prime in the fuel system. If it loses prime you know youre sucking air somewhere between the lift pump and injectors and if it doesnt lose prime you know the air intrusion is somewhere between the tank and the lift pump.
Your electric fuel pump is a good fix, I did that years ago with an IDI that had an air intrusion issue. Worked so good I never did actually fix it.
You can also go the low-tech route of simply adding a simple check-valve at the highest point in the fuel pressure system -- right before the fuel/water separator.
Does the same job, without needing an expensive pump.
If you replace your return lines, be sure to use regular hose clamps and *not* the clamps that are included with that kit. They suck and they don't seal well enough. It took me weeks of regreasing the o-rings and pulling my hair out to fix fuel leaks and air intrusion issues, only to finally find it was the damned clamps causing the issue.
Ok making progress and steps backwards. Had a new issue arise the other night Truck started smoking profusely with the raw diesel smell thought it was just the air intrusion that was getting worse.
Did the return line kit and am no longer having filter drain back issues.
Now the smoke issue is driving me nuts. See video shot not long after startup.
Yes the smoke gets better when she warms up but does not go away.
One other question while we are at it, where is the sender for the engine temp idiot light? When i was washing down the engine I think it grounded out now is on constantly
sounds like you may have a tired injector that is sticking open slightly..
my 88 will actually shut off 1 cylinder if i let it idle for more than 10 minutes or so.
and the temp light sender in in the driver side head .run it for a few days and it will dry and the light will go out.
all 5 of my IDI trucks would do the same thing whenever i washed the engines.
