troubleshooting 4wd issue

1994 F150 302 4R70W
auto hubs
electronic shift
Borg-Warner 1356 tcase

I am seeking advice on troubleshooting a 4wd issue I am having. Currently the truck will not shift into 4wd at all. When I press the button, I hear the usual clicking from under the right side of the dash, but 4wd does not actually engage, nor does the 4wd light illuminate.

I detached the shift motor from the tcase. A small amount of liquid came out when the motor was removed. Is that normal? I had an assistant sit in the truck and press the button while I observed the detached (still connected to wiring harness) motor beneath. The motor jerked a couple times, but did not actually turn. The rhythm of the jerking was the same as the clicking heard under the dash.

At this point I don't know if the shift motor is bad, or there is a connectivity issue in the harness somewhere. Any advice or suggestion is appreciated.
