2002 4WD issues - ideas?

This has happened a few times now. Last winter a couple of times and this year for the first time.

Snow on the ground, I leave the vehicle in 4WD, drive around town, park, eat, one hour later, as I'm pulling away, the vehicle behaves as if it is in 2WD only (remember that the 2002s don't have 2WD option). I try to switch back to AWD to see if it would make a difference, no joy. The 4x4 light stays lit and it still acts like 2WD.

I stop and select 4-Lo, clunk, the vehicle pulls away because it now has traction in 4-Lo. I stop again, shift back into 4WD, clunk, and now all is well, AWD mode now works too.

It seems like something is stuck or snow gets jammed in somewhere?

The dealer allegedly replaced the TC shift motor and replaced the clutches a couple of years ago on an unrelated issue.

Any ideas? I'm much appreciate it.

Bump--anyone? Please?

After writing the above post, I noticed that this would happen several times a day as I go from place to place. I always have to shift into 4-Lo to get everything back to normal. If it is stuck in 2WD (while switch in 4WD position), switching back to A4WD does nothing and still no traction. It happens after the vehicle sits for a while.

It could be the motor going bad or maybe the selector switch on the dash. If you know anyone that doesn't mind missing their shift motor for a bit, you could swap in a different one and try it out.

Edit: If I remeber right, if the light on the dash is on, it means the shift motor is in that position, which could mean internal problems in the transfer case.

According to the dealer, it was the "shift relay" which is the shift motor. What doesn't make since is that the 4x4 light would stay lit even when I tried to shift back to A4WD. Wouldn't a failed motor cause the 4x4 light to flash?

Also, if the vehicle was turned off while in 4-Hi position, doesn't the motor stay in the 4-Hi position? Why would it act like 2WD only after I leave it parked for a while?

Thanks!

Picked it up today. Actually, they replaced the "4WD relay". F57Z-14N089-BA. The question still stands--when the vehicle is left in 4WD and turned off, doesn't it stay in 4WD?
