92 F250 4x4 E4OD. I pulled an 18ft equipment trailer with a small load of furniture about 40 miles. Some stop and go, some highway. When I got to my destination, I put the truck in reverse and it started idling rough, like a gas motor with a big cam, and smoking light grey smoke. In N or P and D it idles fine. All gauges read normal. Tranny never went above 200 degrees.
Anyone experience this before?
It idles rougher in R. It's not moving around like a motor mount is broken.
After we unloaded the furniture and got the room set up it didn't do it as bad, but still idling a bit rough, even in park. The truck had sat about 3 hrs. So it was cooled down.
Just some more info on the truck that may help.
Tranny has about 100000 on the rebuild. Fluid is topped off and looks/smells good.
IP has about 40000 on the rebuild.
I believe the injectors are original with about 280000 miles on them.
Truck doesn't/hasn't been used as a heavy row rig.
your way overdue for injectors anyway, and the rough idle, the smoke are some symptoms.
Yeah. I know the injectors are definitely the weak link. If it just idles a little rough in general, I would've chocked it up to bad injectors and not even posted.
My concern is that it was a lot worse in reverse. So then I started thinking maybe something in the trans was
acting up. It was hot yesterday too (87) so is also considered the IP getting too hot. So other than the injectors, I'm just guessing.
Thanks
Robby
F250, you not mentioning the tranny as a possibility makes me feel better.
