I was just curious as to which all of you guys think would win in a race, will do it at the race track since I know that most of you don't like the street racing. Any way I know that Bullit had a 390 and a toploader 4spd in his 68 mustang, but what did the General Lee have???
i dont know if they ever said in the show.but i know they used several different cars for different things. some had 318's and i think some were 383's im not sure if there were any 440 cars.....i think it would be a close drag race but i think a 390 68 mustang would beat the heavier 383 powered charger. both cars being basicly stock.......

The General of course
Any way I know that Bullit had a 390 and a toploader 4spd in his 68 mustang, but what did the General Lee have???
And here's why:
The General Lee was 1969 Charger R/T, and was shown with actually 3 different engines, the 440 magnum (375 hp-480 tq), the 440 six pack (390 hp-490 tq), and of course the 426 hemi (425 hp-490 tq) depending on the episode/closeup. The car had, in most episodes anyways, an A-727 or B-727 auto, but was known to sometimes have a manual transmission as well.
The 1968 Mustang with a 390 was pushing 335 hp-427 tq.
So with this in mind, which engine would you like to race against?
the 440's were both tough engines as was the hemi and with one of these yes i agree the charger would probably win as long as the gearing was close in both cars. even though the charger is quit a bit heavier . jim
General Lee
Out of 211 Dodge Chargers invoiced to be used as General Lee in the hit TV series "Dukes of Hazzard", only one survived. This one and only is on permanent display in the Volo Auto Museum's Hollywood showroom. 210 General Lees were destroyed performing the leaps and crashes that made the show so exciting. Usually one General Lee was wrecked for each jump made. To make the nose-up jumps possible sandbags or lead plates were bolted into the trunk. The extra weight would bend down the back of the car on landing, destroying the car.
That car's nothing compared to the 1967 Shelby Mustang from "Gone in 60 Seconds" that we saw at Volo. Now that's a sweet car.
Well, Bullit allready proved he could take a black charger........

I cant find any listings on the weight of the charger though, but the big block stangs werent all that heavy, up untill recently a mustang had never weighed more than 3500lbs not even the big 71-73's, and now the fastest ever, the 03 cobra is also the heviest, even hevier than converts.
I read that there were around 350 General Lees at one time, most with slant 6's for the jumps and the ones with the hemis and 440's being for the dirt road chases and sound effects. By the way, I was in Gatlinburg, Tn the other week and there's this place ironically named "Cooter's Garage" and in front of it sits a General Lee, but I don't know if it is an original.
The were both running mid 13s and the charger was heavier. I think the NADA guides put my truck at like 3,200 lbs. They are not a very reliable source as mine weighed at least 4,200 in stock form. They were pretty much even cars. The HEMI probably would have won by a little and the 440s would have been real close.
I'm a Ford guy so I'm gonna say Bullit's Mustang would win, until General Lee started jumping every obstacle in sihgt! My favorite Dukes line is Sherrif Rosco P Coaltrain, "That was a horendous crash".
