The engine doesn't use hardly any fuel at idle. If you want to try an experiment, take the vacuum line off the distributor while it's idling. Does it die or try to die when you do this? If it does, something is not right with this line, it may be hooked to the wrong place on the carb. Leave it off, put a screw in the line to block the vacuum leak, and then tune it and set the idle with it disconnected, and then take it for a drive.
I will try this. I'm about to head out and tinker on it a bit. Was hoping to replace the spark plugs and plug wires today, but I discovered my wife had plans for us for the day, so maybe I'll get to it this afternoon.
Ok, guys got it back from the shop. It was a vacuum leak, a line running to the rear. Also a couple of my spark plug wires where shot. that got it running, need to adjust the idle a little but it runs smooth now, so I'm happy.

Make sure you check for vac leaks to, as this was my problem.

I began removing the carburetor today, and while I was removing the hoses from the body of the carb, I saw a piece of vacuum line that had broken off. I thought maybe that was the culprit all along. I replaced the broken line, reconnected the kickdown linkage, the throttle cable and the cruise control, got it all hooked back up and jumped into the truck to try starting it (just hoping maybe that line was the cause of all of my strife). No go, and now there's even a little tapping sound when I try to start it... so I am, in fact, a step backwards from where I was before. Something I did when I removed the various things off of the carb has caused something to tap or tick or knock. I haven't touched the timing or ignition components.
Also the fuel line is frozen to the nut is frozen to the fuel filter housing/inlet... so I am going to have to cut the line and put an put an inline fuel filter in.
