So it's been a while that I've been out of the pre-computer controlled vehicles. So here's my bone head question.
I have a 71 f250 360 2v auto.
Went to start my truck yesterday it cranked, started, ran and true to form stopped running, she doesn't like to start and run on the first attempt. Went to crank her again and it sounded like a buzzer. I tried to jump across the poles on the starter solenoid and got the same buzz type sound. It isn't the sound of the starter drive free spinning like it isn't catching the flywheel it is more of a buzz like the loser sound from a game show.
This would be the starter? I vaguely remember this type of thing and smacking the starter with a big wrench to free it up. It hasn't overheated and I don't have headers.
Another bone head question...is bone head 2 words or is bonehead 1 word? S
On unknown stuff like that it's easiest to start at the beginning and work from there. Clean cables, posts, charge battery or replace it. Make sure solenoid is grounded well and connections clean and tight. Everybody knows about batt cables but the other connections are just as important. They have to get a wrench turned on them at least for this to help. Loose or corroded connections at starter or elsewhere and grounds will often mimic other problems.
One way to check for bad connections at that point, check whether the headlights shine brightly during cranking, or do they dim completely?
X2 what Tedster9 said. Mine did the same thing when I brought her home and the battery was weak. Jumped it off and cranked right up so I threw on the battery charger and no problems since. Its difficult getting back to the basics on these things after you have driven a computer controlled vehicle for so long but whatever knowledge you had before will come back.
3 X. Do a visual check. Like Tedster said. Corrosion at the battery terminals, corrosion trailing down the inside of the cables, etc. A person should always fix what they know is broke 1st.
Thanks guys I appreciate you giving me the advice/information in a way that doesn't make me feel like an idiot. I had been using her as my daily driver for the last few weeks and now back in my 2005 magnum till I get this solved. Driving her sure takes me back to my young days and how much I missed the pure simple art of driving.
My oldest stepdaughter, just turned 16, is dying to drive it as her driver. So glad she likes old iron.

Try to teach her the same thing I tried to teach my son... "Trucks don't have to go fast to do their job".
When I read your OP, my first thought was "Low Voltage".
I have to agree with the tips given above. If you still have problems after working through that list, get back to us again.
Although I agree with Tedster, he missed the most important issues,
#1 Bone-head should be hyphenated
#2 There are no Bone-head questions, only Bone-heads.
My first reaction to the topic was "What's a 'starter bone', and how do you remove the head from one?". That missing hyphen really does change the meaning.
HA! I was disappointed when no one picked up on the most important point in my thread...glad it was better late than never.
Status: new battery as well as cables and she's back to leaking fluid in my driveway instead of the street.
You guys ever had to clean trans fluid off driveway pavers? F'n HOA says I have to clean the driveway or face fines.

I've heard diluted pool acid. I've never done it so I'd suggest google or Bing for the recipe.

how many pavers did you hit? if'it's only a few, they're pretty cheap, just replace them.

Kind of what I was thinking too. And it will free up more time instead of scrubbing the driveway. Actually my first thought was to flip them but the bottom is flat vs. the top a slight rounded edge.

You may not match the same colors.
Cat liter sucks up oil. Walmart use to have some oil clean up stuff.
Tide soap and a stiff handled push brush does wonders power wash off or pool acid if no ones watching you hose it off..
