Courtesy start hiccup?

One of the many things I've enjoyed about my truck is the ignition bump "Courtesy start" feature: most of the time I can have my seatbelt buckled mirrors folding out by the time the truck's started, so I want it working 100%

But over the weekend, it started spazzing out on me Same procedure as ever: just bump the key, but instead of the truck rolling over and starting, I'd get a kick-back, almost like a dead battery, but if I tried again, and hold the key into the start position, it'd startup just fine.

Never had any issues with remote start, it'd fire up the truck everytime

Anyone else ever dealt with this?

Chuck, I have never heard of the ignition bump "Courtesy start" feature. Maybe one of the batteries is going bad. I don't know, sounds like you just need to turn the key until it starts.

I've never heard it called "courtesy start", but bump start was in my 2010 F-150, as well as my sig truck. I don't know when it became standard in the 6.7's as well. I was thinking maybe a longer bump of the key would help, as a short bump maybe confuses the computer into thinking you changed your mind. Ram had this same issue a while back, before they went to the keyless start.

All fords have this starter provision now.

But my truck never takes long enough to start for me to get my seatbelt buckled and mirrors set...

Since 2008 they have had the feature where you hit the start and release and it will do the rest.

lol, y'all are frikkin awesome g

My old beemer had the bump start, it spoiled me.

My truck doesn't take long to start, per se, guess I'm just getting in a rhythm now that I've had it awhile: hook the belt with my left hand while the right hand's bumping the key, right hand grabs the belt from the left while the left hand flicks the mirror, right hand clicks the belt then disables traction control and selects a gear while left hand grabs the wheel.....

UNLESS the bump start kicks back, and then all hell breaks loose, lol, it's an orchestrated symphony of movement

Maybe I'm getting so fast I'm not holding the key on long enough, I'll pay a little more attention to that and see if that does the trick.

Learn something new every day Didn't know about the bump start. So it just requires a quick click of the start position rather than holding it there while it cranks? Does that handle the glow plug as well?

Maybe "bump" is a little inaccurate, but the system does work as designed: by the time you roll that key through the "Start" position, to where you feel the ignition stop, you can let go and it'll do the rest.

As for the glow plug, can't really help ya there, sorry, we had a "cold" winter for us, and it never gave me any starting issues, but in those colder upper states, maybe you would need to let the key sit "on" for a little bit, I dunno....

You'll still want to wait for the glow plug light to go out (if that's your thing) before turning the key to the start position. The bump start doesn't do anything for the glow plugs. It merely engages the starter until the engine is running.

On cold winter mornings if I don't wait for the glow plugs the engine runs very rough for about the first 10 seconds. I usually use the remote start even if I'm walking towards the truck as that does the glow delay.

I do the seatbelt while waiting for 'wait to start'. It's such a habit for me that I 'wait to start' on gasoline powered vehicles as well.
And yeah I've had this feature on enough vehicles now that it's an expectation for me too.
