Looking at buying a couple of four wheelers and have pretty much narrowed it down to 2 brands. Polaris and Honda. I can't remember the models of Honda that I rode but one was a 450 and the other was a 330. These were good machines. They were automatic clutch. That would take a little while to get used to but no prob. The Polaris I rode the Trail Boss and the Magnum, both with a 330. These seemed like good machines as well. I liked the idea of an automatic but I could see some times when I would want the ability to shift. The Polaris seemed like it handled much easier than the Honda and seemed like it was a little more stable. Whatever I get will need to handle a variety of terrain because I will be riding it up and down some pretty steep hills to get to the mud that eventually comes out to a sand trail. Just thought I would see what other people had experienced and what suggestions they might have. Sorry this is so long.
I recently bought a Honda Rancher 4x4. It is considered a 350 (329cc to be exact). I find it a good little machine. The only complaint I think I have is the full time 4x4 makes it tough to steer sometimes, and it needs a little more ground clearance. It will go just about anywhere you need to go. Only been stuck 2 times, and both times a little more ground clearance would of made the difference.
I am looking at Suzuki right now. Their machines seem to have the features I am looking for. Manual tranny. Selectable 4x4 and differential locker. Multi speed transfer case. All manually operated by levers, not push button. Great features.
I would say that you should go with the Honda. They cost a little more than the Suzuki, but are built alot better in my opinion. I have never seen a Honda break down beyond limping home, but I can't even remember how many times I had to push my old Suzuki's home. But then again I never bought the Suzuki's new, so they could have been bagged.
What ever you pick, I hope you have plenty of trouble free miles.
One time we got a Honda Rancher stuck up to the case in gumbo mud. When it dried enough ot walk on the Honda started right up and busted right through the mud. We have Polaris machines that will do the same thing but I have never gotten one stuck enough to try. Both are excellent choices, however I do believe that Honda has a slightly more dependable motor.
Stay AWAY from the Polaris Trail Boss. It's a real dog. It's has no power, way over priced, and is UGLY. Personally, I have owned countless Polaris quads, I loved them all. They were very dependable and rode really smooth. My favorite is the Polaris Sportsman 500!! I also like the new 700!!!
from a repair standpoint, i run a machine shop, and rebuild cranks all the time. the only honda i ever did, was one that the owner left the oil fill plug out of, and bailed it dry.... suzukies, yammaha, polais,, i see them all the time.... i personally have a '81 honda 110 3 wheeler (i'm 250lbs, and it hauls me around) my father has a 84 big red, and my grandfather has a 85 big red.... all great machines....
my votes for honda
i say kowasaki man but thats my opinion. if you are going up and down steep hills you definatly want the manual. iv heard of a few people getting killed because they automatic picked up too mutch speed going down a slope and they lost control. but the honda is also a very good 4wheeler
I don't think it is on the market anymore, but one of the besti have seen was a diesel four wheelers. I dont remember who made it but i want to say it was polaris. it had the low end toqure to go up high angle hills and pull stuff like no other. Another big advantge is you dont have to have a gas can for the four wheeler and another for the tractor.
if you plan on using and or abusing the 4 wheeler go with honda. they requir a lot less maintencance. myu buddy used to have a polaris 500 ho and everytime he would take it wheelin/muddin he would spend up to a week or more fixing, adjusting, or replacing parts just so he could take it out the next weekend. he tradded some guy for a honda and does a lot less maintenance onm it. and the parts are easier to come by.
I love our Polaris Sportsman 335, but when it needs to be fixed, parts are EXPENSIVE. Hard to fix yourself too. Brakes aren't the greatest either, they get mud and stuff in them, after time they don't work. Overall its OK.
Well I ended up going with the polaris. As far as the hill thing goes the automatic will pick up speed down the hills but give it just a little gas and it will slow it way down to a crawl. I got 2 polaris magnums and a Sportsman. I was very impressed with them all. The first thing I did was see how well they would take the hills because that worried me the most but they went up and down like a dream. The second thing I did was roll one of the magnums, completely my fault, but it barely even scuffed it. I was taking thos 2X4 magnums through some tough mud and they went right through. And that Sportsman I could stop in the middle of some deep puddles and put it in 4 and crawl right out like it was nothing. I think I will be very happy with my choice Thanks for the info guys.
