I am working on my bed boards for my '55 F-100. The manual I downloaded some time back gives all the dimensions for the depth and width. My question is; Is it really necessary to cut the 1 1/8 and 1/16 deep on the back of the boards near the tailgate or is that only if you add the endcap piece.
Those reliefs are there to keep the end cap flush...the end cap is there to keep the ends of the wood from splitting/splintering. So why would you not want to use the end cap?
And cutting boards for food, and many joints that show the end grain. But in the case of the bed wood, it is a good idea to use the cap to protect it. It is easy to hit the edge of end grain when loading and have pieces split off.
