My hunch is that you might get enough voltage at high RPMs, but there wouldn't be any charging at idle. Or, I could be wrong: maybe the higher field voltage will coax more volts and amps out of the generator. You'd definitely have to change the regulator.
Last time I went looking for a 12V generator at a junkyard there were plenty to choose from for around $20 apiece, so why not just put a 12V generator in?
I was just wondering if it would work. i havent got around to the
junkyards yet . still trying to decide if i will convert it over.thanks
for the reply.
I replaced the field coils inside my 6V generator to convert it to 12V. Works great. Also needed regulator, guage modifications and bunches of bulbs, etc, etc, but I found it well worth it. Looks original and no new brackets or belts to mess with.
