From what I am reading I may have the same common problem with the Camshaft Position Sensor, but I thought I would run it by everyone anyway, so please forgive.
Yesterday I am accelerating pretty hard to pass a semi and I have a sudden loss of power, engine still running, brief "check engine" light. I pull to the side, engine still running, all gauges are normal, "check engine" light off, idling normally, I continue home without further problems about 45 minutes away. Drove an hour to work this morning, no problems. This afternoon I talked to our helicopter mechanic and he had an older software program to check codes. It read "125 faults" but no specifics on it. While I was idling, it then died several times suddenly but started with ease each time. At one point I was high-idling and it suddenly reduced to a normal idle while my foot was still on the accelerator. During one of these times the "wait to start" came back on while the engine was running.
Does all of this sound like the Camshaft Position Sensor? The only recent repair: the water pump was changed out last week at a shop and I had it straight-piped.
I have identified a Delphi HTS101 sensor for about $30 and it claims to be OEM.
Please let me know if this sounds consistent and thanks for your time.
His scanner read 125 codes cause his scanner doesn't work on these trucks.
The last part sounds like cps.
Regarding the first part, I was unable to reproduce it both last night after it happened or tonight. I accelerated pretty hard and everything was fine. It is pretty hit and miss. Tonight I got off work, made a couple stops and drove home for an hour and it didn't miss a beat.
I'd swap it out and see, really should have a spare in the glove box anyways, just in case if you don't. There was also a recall on the 97 and newer trucks so the CPS may not cost you a think at the dealership. I always make a habit of running a Ford CPS.
The new sensors arrived today, the same grey Ford one that was in there. It was a quick swap-out and after 15 minutes of high idle and a quick test drive everything is working fine.
Since the day I posted this I hadn't had another event and I drove it about 400 miles. One thing I did notice on that day when I had the multiple failures in a row, during idle it was occasionally ticking-up on the RPM a bit several times, just a few. All of that is resolved now and hopefully this does the trick.
Thanks again for all the advice. Once again this site prove most valuable.
