So I stopped at my local parts store and asked for an ignition coil for my 68 360. He didn't look it up and judged asked "One with an internal resistor or one with me resistor?" I didn't recall seeing any kind of resistor under the hood so I got one with internal resistor. Now I'm thinking hey what about that so called pink resistor behind the dash? Did I get the wrong one?
If you still have the factory Pink resistance wire in use you would need one either saying "with external" resistor or "without internal" resistor.
Ya figured as much. I went back and got a Standard UC12 universal coil with NO internal resistor. It's stamped right on the side "use with external resistor".
Uni, why are you replacing your coil? What are your symptoms?
If you have a coil in place and if you have access to a voltmeter, check the voltage to ground from the high side of the coil. If you have points make sure they are closed. If you read 7-8 volts you have an external resistor; if you read battery voltage you do not.
Coils rarely fail, are often replaced.
If you put in a coil that requires an external resistor and you have none something will soon burn up.
There is a huge body of literature on this site on this topic. Do a search and you will find what you need.
Just replacing stuff. Timing set, water pump, fuel pump, gaskets, painting things blue! Getting a new distributor too (stock) so figured I may as well replace the old coil.
