Oil Filter change question

Have a friend who did an oil change on his 2012 6.7. He is getting a small drip every so often from the oil filter. I of course asked if he placed some oil on the filter gasket before putting the filter on thinking that maybe the gasket puckered. He said he did lube the gasket with fresh oil before installing the filter. Also pre-filled the filter before installing it.

Question is, can the filter be removed and replaced without draining the oil in the oil pan. Don't know the guy personally but I would hate for anyone to take an oil bath.

Or does the pan need to be drained and do a entire new oil and filter change.

I've never seen a vehicle yet that you can't remove the oil filter without draining the pan.

I would personally spray brake clean on top of oil filter and try to clean off as best as possible. When you pre fill filter its easy for some to spill over on other side of seal. And air will blow it around and drip. It dont take much to make a mess.

I would try everything I could to NOT have to remove the oil filter. Clean it up, make sure it is tight. Maybe even slightly loosen it, clean it, and re-tighten...

I enjoy being able to puncture the bottom of the oil filter and let the oil drain out BEFORE I remove it. Otherwise I make a mess... Should've been more specific in my first post above.

X2 on trying to clean it first. I had the same issue after changing the oil and the condensation from the AC was washing some of the residual oil around the gasket and dripping down the side of the filter.

Funny how no matter if I put a hole in bottom of filter or not I still get a crap load of oil on my hands taking it off.Maybe I need to let the filter drain for a few hours first.Which I wont do.Lol.

My first oil change on this truck I got a drip from filter, tighened it another half turn and all was good.I tend to try not to overtighten but that particular time it needed a little more.

he will get a bath. there is probably a 1/2 QT above the filter that comes out everytime you change the filter, making the mess.

I get a drip or two for awhile too because I didnt clean up well enough after the oil change. crawl under with brake clean or some rags and wipe it down.

Yup, try cleaning it. The drips usually come from the few drips of oil that come out as you are spinning on the new filter.

Prob not the case, but sometimes when removing the old filter the old gasket stays stuck to the block rather than coming off with the filter. If your not paying attention, you can end up with two gaskets and a leak. Never done it personally but come close and caught it on a re-check. If he does pull it, the screwdriver puncture trick saves a lot of the mess. Then I hold the pan right up under it as I loosen to catch the last little bit. Never have a mess that way...

Yup, I done it. What a mess! Fortunately I can still learn so it's only happened once.

Yeah, change my own oil and it is a ridiculous design flaw that leaves so much oil ABOVE the filter after engine shut down. Have decided that from now on I will be puncturing the filter and draining it before removal as well. Just pop a hole in the bottom and go back in the house for half an hour or so, maybe then it will only be half as messy...

I punch a hole in the bottom of mine, let it drain for a quite a while, it stops coming out, I take the filter off and I get another gush of oil, honestly I might as well have never bothered to punch the hole. Has anyone figured out how to really do it?
