blackstone results

Decided last week to send in an oil test to Blackstone.

I started getting a miss recently which I think was due to bad fuel. I was coming up through Oklahoma and was working great until I filled up at this one gas station. The miss is at idle and sounds rough at times and other times no issues.

I changed my filters (inline) and top of the 7.3, the inline was pretty dirty and the engine filter had a bit of dirt in the bottom.

I admit I got behind on my oil this time, usually have it changed at the 6000 mile mark. (7600 miles on this oil sample)

I plan on having Rosewood replace the injectors next week. It has 180,000 miles on the truck.

AE Shows a contrib on #3 and #8. But everything else shows fine with no codes.

Whats your thoughts on the numbers?

Thanks
Jason

I could be a turbo bearing, but I think it's more along the lines of copper leaching from the engine oil cooler....I think the tubing is copper.

Thanks Dan,

I was thinking about doing a rebuild on the turbo but since it seems to be running fine , plenty of boost, sounds good, etc, I may just do another blackstone in about 3000 miles as a test to see how things are looking.

It's an easy job and peace of mind to check the turbo shaft for play.

The only troble I have with that is....some up/down movement is ok, that's how the seals operate, and that would be the same motion to check the brass shaft bearings...so I don't see that as a real good check....it is free though. The in/out motion.....that's the check, but the factory thrust plate is steel, as is the mating part. Wear on that won't generate any copper.

I had a high copper reading and it was the turbo bearing, FWIW.

Report looks fine. Copper is considered normal under 40 ppm on a single UOA report unless you see a trend upwards in subsequent reports down the road. This slight increase in copper could be from the oil cooler or a change in oil brands. With the low 65 ppm reading of the Moly it looks like you have used or are using a brand of oil with Molybdenum in it....Delo 400, Schaeffer's, Rotella T-6 etc... Have you switch oil brands lately?

Iron wear looks great for the amount of miles on the oil. Navistar considers anything under 100 ppm normal. Silicon is nice and low at 7 ppm so you air filtration system is doing a great job.

Oil viscosity has just reached the very low end of a 40 weight oil so it is a good time to change it.

No fuel, no antifreeze, no water and only a trace of soot.

Looking good man!

Thanks!

In the past 4 years, I have always used T6, once used the regular Rotella.

I usually change the filter 1/2 way between the oil changes and top off the oil to replace what the filter lost.

Thanks
Jason

It's working for you - keep doing it. 12K might be a bit high on the OCI's (oil change intervals) for T-6 since it was close to a 30 weight oil in this sample, but the additives seemed to hold up ok. You might consider 7,500-9,000 to be on the safe side without a bypass filter.

I have had copper go up in the 20's on my F-250 a few times over the past 8 years. Still the same turbo, 80,000 miles later.
