I recently purchased a 85' F350 with a 460 in it. I want to convert it to EFI. I'm a little confused about the differences in the factory EFI and what is the best set up to use. Ultimately, I would like to buy another truck to use for the EFI parts, and if I am lucky, a 5 speed too. What year of parts truck should I be looking for? What are the year to year differences in the 460 EFI trucks?
It's a lot of work to switch. Heads and intake are different and do not match up between carbed and fuelie. Not to mention changing computers, and wiring for injectors and sensors.
Not much difference in the fuelie years(87-97.)
92/93 brought deeper dished pistons and improved F3TE heads.
Why do you want to switch?
You can make an '85 carbed 460 nearly as reliable as a fuelie one.

Thanks for the response.
My thoughts on the FI were to improve reliability, driveability and maybe little bit of MPG. I do understand this truck will never get good gas mileage.
This truck is new to me. It runs good, no major fuel system issues. The accelerator pump is leaking a little, if I keep the carb I will probably rebuild it. I'm not afraid of carburetors, but it has been awhile since I have worked on them or owned a carburated vehicle.
I live at 9000' and will frequently take the truck anywhere between 5000' and 10,000'. I was thinking the FI would better handle my elevation then the carburetor. I'm open to suggestions though. I purchased this truck as a budget builder, and we needed a pickup. I don't want to just throw money at it. It would be less expensive to stick with what the truck came with, I'm not sure what the correct way to go is.
You should be fine at those altitudes. Might lean out at 5k but I'm not sure as I'm at 1100 ft.
Try to think about the money you spend on a project like this as the easy part. The time you will spend working on this and the headaches generated by it are the real challenge.
My vote: run the carbureted motor until you find a junked EFI 460 out of a pickup with a C6, and just do a complete motor swap later.

I have found a complete 90' with a supposedly recently rebuilt 460 for cheap, transfer case is junk. This truck is an automatic, I would prefer to find an injected truck with a ZF5 in it, but if I can buy this one right it might be a good start.
