fuel injector cleaner

I'm wondering what fuel injector cleaner everyone has been using. I've read about royal purple max clean, redline si-1, Lucas n others. Sometimes I have hard starting. Use to start on first crank. Now it cranks 4-5 times before starting. I use chevron gas. Is the gas the culprit of this hard starts. Open to all advice n opinions. Thanks.

If you think it is gas related, first thing I would try is to change the fuel filter. I found out that my newly purchased 95 F150 with 175,000 miles on it still had the original fuel filter on it. You should have seen the mud that came out of it when I finally got it off! The surprising part was the amount of water that was also trapped in my filter.

Also, check your fuel pressure and when was the last time it was tuned up?

Does cycling the key a couple of times before attempting to start the engine have any effect? When were the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor last replaced?

This is why you don't use fuel injector cleaners. They lift all of the junk off the bottom of the tank and run it through the system making it worse. If you want to clean the injectors without forcing everything in the tank through, take a look at the link in my signature.

I did the manual injector cleaning, and it didn't fix mine. Mine are BAD, though, clogged enough to cause a skip and be low on power. My old shop teacher and a couple of my buddies said that I really ought to have the injectors chemically cleaned by a shop, but I haven't found one that can do it yet. The one I talked to only did cleaning through the intake, which doesn't fix my problem. He recommended Lucas injector cleaner, though. I think I'm going to end up putting a set of injectors in it.

Some old timers taught me years ago that anything mild enough to pour into your gas tank without destroying the rubber and plastic pieces is too mild to clean the injectors. The stuff that works is injected directly into the rail pressure test port via shop air pressure and a special regulated tank apparatus as the engine runs. The cleaner of choice at the time was sold at GM dealerships for use by their service department.

From working at an auto parts store for a couple decades I can tell you most of those pour in cleaners (and other products) work through the placebo effect...

Yes either the shop air or the pressurized can method.

I find it is easier to use the pressurized can at the fuel rail.
The pressurized can:

I use 3M injector cleaner and run the engine on the cleaner with the fuel pump disabled for about 20-30 minutes.
You run the injector cleaner in through the tap valve (test valve) on the fuel rail (manifold).
Keep the injector cleaner between 35-40 PSI with the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator to keep the cleaner from going into the fuel tanks.

Subford,
What kind of apparatus do you have to run that through? I know they sell hardware for it, but I'm not sure exactly what's required. That's the kind of chemical injector cleaning that I was thinking of, and that was recommended to me.

My set for the 3M cleaner is a NAPA brand.
It has a gauge with a regulator and place for the can to screw on to it plus a hose to the fuel rail.

Here is a photo of it:

A quart of off-road diesel in each tank for two tankfulls will do wonders! It must be OFF-ROAD diesel and don't use any more than a quart or you might get some detonation.

Yeap, I've heard the same thing. Anything more than a gallon to 15 gallons of unleaded will certainly cause detonation, even with lowered base timing of 10 degrees BTDC.
