I am the owner of a 1977 F-150 Ranger XLT. Over the past two years of owning the truck I've gone through quite a lot, including a full motor and tranny rebuild. Today my question is what exhaust would be best for my truck. Right now the truck had Heddman Long tube headers straight back to true dual glass packs. The sound is very average. The idol is decent and the sound and volume is average to slightly loud. Im going to keep the headers however i would like to try an different muffler. Something that really emphasizes the idol and is very aggressive and very loud. Keep in mind the truck has a 302 small block bored to a 310 with a Comp Xtreme Energy cam (.477 lift, .256 duration) with a Edelbrock Air gap intake, Holly 600 carb, and headman long tubes. Thanks for the help.
Flowmaster 40 series or the thrush knockoff "welded" muffler if you want to spend about half the dough. 2-1/2" duals with an H-pipe. Will give you the nice tough sounding idle you're after.
I've heard a lot if flowmasters and they all sound the same plus they have such a drone. Is there any other more aggressive things you know of? Maybe a type of bullet style.
Well I have some cherry bomb glass packs on my 79 302. Pretty darn loud and really brings out the rumble. Love the rough idle from my cam. Although I don't have a complete system.... Stock manifolds then a bit of pipe then the cherry bombs. Stops right at the end of the cab (standard cab) nothing else after the cherry bombs lol
I would go for an X pipe when you get the exhaust done. They offer a big improvement over true duals or even an H pipe.
There is a thread in the dent forum about a 390 exhaust setup. One user has posted a video of his truck with a very nice exhaust note. You should check that out.
I used to have a '72 E200 302 with hedman headers, H pipe and glasspacks, straight pipes to the back. It sounded great but with a 302, couldnt back it up.
My current '79 F250 is getting stock or quieter...
