I have an 84 F150 with the 5.8l 2bbl engine. Had it for a few months and while tracking down a poor idle condition, I came across some unusual emissions info.
I thought I was dealing with a typical smog equipment strip, but it looks like this truck never had a cat, air pump, or EGR system!
I'm old enough to remember the era and I have a vague recollection that trucks over a certain GVW were exempt from smog equipment, but I was pretty surprised to find this in an F150. Truck is pretty basic. Regular cab, long box, dual tanks AT. Canadian market, that's why there is French on the emissions sticker. No emissions testing where I live, (at least not yet).
Canada was behind in emissions requirements. That's where the difference is coming from. Just like you can see what's coming by looking at what California is implementing. It trickles down to everyone eventually.
What struck me as unusual is that even in Canada, most trucks of this era and even back into the mid 70's did have the emissions equipment. That was reinforced as I was looking for a replacement carb and not a single truck I found had the same lack of emissions plumbing.
Now, this makes for some interesting possibilities with this truck as the rule of thumb when the emissions testing comes is that the truck must have the equipment it was originally built with. Looks like my job just became easier! I am contemplating a 4bbl swap, but the manifold I found has the longer studs which imply there must be an EGR spacer. Pretty sure I can come up with a non EGR spacer, but I'm at least going to make the effort to ensure I am compliant with the sticker should there be any testing in the future.
If over 8600 GVW your truck would have no emissions but your showing 6100 GVW May be a Canadian thing .I know a lot of 1988 Canadian 351W and 460 engines were still 4 barrel carb while in the states they were all EFI in 88
