Just got a 2003 F350 4x4 with 6.0 155k
Crawled under it today and noticed this hole has been cut in tranny case. Why would someone have done this? Will it hurt anything? Should I cover it somehow and if so how? Thanks in advance. I know I'm new here but any insight is appreciated
looks like they cut it to get to the torque converter bolts. Its safe to say either the motor or transmission have been removed. I would try to cover it with something to keep the crap out of there.
Why would they do that? I've never pulled a 4r100 but every trans I've pulled had access thru a dust cover. I'd be worried about what else the so called mechanics did to that thing.

They probably did it to get easier access to the torque converter nuts and to turn the motor over without removing the fan shroud.

I'm going to guess someone stripped the converter nuts. They did that to get a torch in there to blow them off without cutting into the flex plate. Yeah it looks crappy and is a hack but not huge issue.
The "mechanic" wanted access to the flex plate bolts, simple as that. The tranny has been disconnected from the engine before but thats no biggie. The bell housing primarily acts as a mounting plate/dust cover anyways so get a sheet of aluminum and attach it to the bellhousing to cover that hole if you want to. Either way, it wont affect the workings of the truck. If anything your converter might last longer because it's able to stay cooler now that its getting circulation but I highly doubt it. Ignore it or fix it, either way it doesnt affect the workings of the transmission.
