advice on clutch

Pulled my tranny today trying to diagnose a knock coming from the bell housing area. (i thinnk its a rod knock but my dad said it sounds more in the bell housing) its a 2v 5.4l the knock is very very quit at idle you cannot hear it unless you are under the truck near the oil pan and bell housing. as the rpms climb you cannot hear it but if you hold it at any rpm its louder than idle and also as they fall back to an idle you can hear it. the noise seems to chainge slightly as the clutch is pressed in but that might be because the idle climbs a couple hundred. Any my question is, when we pulled the clutch off the center that the input shaft slides into has about 1/16 of an inch of play maybe a little more. i was wondering if they where supposed to be good and tight or if anyone has any other input on the knocking, thanks for any advice
