look at the axle code on the door frame, if it ends in a 5 you have 4:11, if it ends in a 9 you have 3:55, if there is a letter with it t means you have limited slip. or look at the metal tag on the axle.
3:55 are higher gears they make your rpms about 2000 at 75mph, they get better mileage
4:11 are lower run around 2500 at 75, better for hauling
limited slip means it harder to get stuck.

The number itself is the ratio of drive shaft revolutions to 1 axle revolutions... So 4.11 revolutions to 1 axle revolution means it is easier for the engine to do the work but your speed is slower. They are good for heavy hauling where you need the power. 3.55's are more of a free wheeling overdrive gear that keeps your rpm's at a reasonable level for freeway driving and greatly helps mpg. In addition to the door sticker, there should be an aluminum tag under one of the differential cover bolts that identifies the gearing. Counting drive shaft revolutions to one wheel revolution also works, as does the ratio of pinion gear teeth to ring gear teeth...
