7.3 PSD or Cummins?

Hello,

Ok, so I've been wanting to get my 5.8 out of my truck for a while, it needs more work then it's worth cause the guy I bought it from apparently rigged a lot of temp fixes in it to keep it running instead of just fixing them right, I have a 7.3 PSD but in doing research I've found that dropping a 7.3 in can be a pain, so I started thinking I could sell the 7.3 and buy a Cummins and put that in instead. I'd just like to know if it's easier to swap a Cummins in then a 7.3?
Thanks.

It would be easier to put a Cummins 8.3 in there than a powerstroke.

it's going to cost you around 5 grand to put a comapart in it. you would be better off just selling what you have and buying a diesel powered truck.

Lol, so I'm guessing a 5.9 Cummins would be a lot easier then a 7.3.

no, it will be easier and cheaper to sell what you have and buy a diesel.

I'd rather not sell my truck, but I'll think about it if I'm sure I don't want to do the conversion.

So back to the Cummins, whats the best to put in there? 12V, 24v, or Common Rail? I've been doing some reading and I'm not sure which one I'd like, the Common rail sounds like the ticket to me but then I'm back to more computer hassle.

I personally like VE pumped 12 valves the best (or in my case, 8 valve) followed very closely by P-pump and A-pump 12 valves. What are your horsepower goals?

300 hp + and however much torque comes with it. The reason I like the Common Rail is it's a nice ride, I've never driven a 12V though, what's the drive like on them? And if you know, how would connect my tranny to any of the Cummins?

I don't quite understand what you are asking.

I used Destroked's adapter and flexplate.

Well, the Common Rail I drove was altogether pretty smooth, the acceleration, and even the idle weren't shaking the truck to much (maybe I'm not used to I6 diesels), just wondering if the 12V is smooth as well.

And what's the fuel mileage on the 12v?

It seems that the VE pumped 12 valves get the best mileage.

Can anyone explain how I hook my E4OD to a Cummins, I understand I have to get an adapter plate, but if I swapped in a 12V what would control it? Because the 12V have no computer. And if I put in a computer controlled Cummins is there an adapter/program device for the tranny?

Thanks for any input.

I agree. The VE pumped 6BT is cheaper, runs smooth(for what it is), gets the best mpg(20-22 in a 4x4), and has the best driving manners. Not comparing it to a common rail, because they are a lot of computer work, just like a powerstroke.
Also not so sure about running a 300+hp 6BT against the E40D. I am sketchy if that will survive, even with a good rebuild. You're talking around 700 pounds of tork at around 16-1700 rpm.
