So for lack of a better term, the clutch on my 1978 3 speed manual sounds like it has a bad rod bearing lol. Very loud knocking, banging sound while running. With foot off the pedal, it more or less goes away, but touch the pedal and its non stop and can be felt through the pedal. Clutch seems to function/release fine, but knocking continues until foot is off the pedal.
I agree with bpete. If it were me, while I had everything apart, I'd redo the clutch and pressure plate, and perhaps even resurface the flywheel while I'm in there.
Yep it sounds like a bad throw out bearing. Time for a clutch job or live with it till she blows. Been there done that. Can give you one helluva ride. And be very costly to repair/replace. I don't recommend that choice.
Was definitely the throw out/release bearing. Pressure plate also had broken teeth and the flywheel was chewed up pretty good too so I replaced everything today. I left the pilot bearing since it felt fine and i didn't have a way to pull it out at the time. I'm not to worried about it.
