clutch job

I did a search, but couldn't really find the specifics... Has anyone done a clutch job? Here's my situation... for the moment my clutch is working or seems to be working fine.... but here's what it's doing. when I'm driving and say I stop at an intersection disengaging the clutch, holding the pedal down, I hear a chirping or a squeaking, if I take it out of gear and let the pedal out, the sound stops... and if I slightly depress the pedal I get the chirping and feel a little tapping or vibration in the pedal. even if I depress the pedal all the way to floor there is still a little chirping, unless it's in neutral. Like I said, it's working fine fine, with a clear friction point and pretty smooth shifting, it's just when I'm sitting at a light or intersection that it makes the noise. Is this a sign of things to come or am I just overreacting to a normally operating clutch?

Sounds to me like the throwout bearing. It only really turns when the clutch is disengaged. Thats why you hear it when you press the pedal it squeaks. Hope this helps.

If it is the throwout bearing, does it make more sense to do a whole clutch replacement versus just the bearing, either way, you're pulling the tranny and bell housing right?

I agree, too much to just do the release bearing, might as well do the whole job. Dont forget to replce the pilot bearing in the crank and have a real good look at the flywheel surface.Surface defects such as hot spots and light cracking will come out when you have it resurfaced. Same as when you have a disk brake rotor turned. And while yur there, look at the starter ring on the flywheel. if it looks worn either have it turned over or replace it. Look at the clutch fork rod, check the area where it contacts the release bearing and look for wear and cracks. Lube the pivot point on the clutch fork ball upon reinstallation and a "light" coat of grease on the tranny splines. Use an alignment tool to get the correct alignment with the clutch disk and pressure plate. Most kits now come with a plastic tool for this. get a good manual with the torque specs. All should be well.
