I have an 84 ford with a 460 and an 88 tranyy and its stuck in second I have no clue why any ideas why its stuck in second ?? even when its parked and you push in the clutch still wont come out off second before this happened it was grinding and you couldn't put it in second unless you were at a complete stop and now its stuck any ideas how this could happen??
It sounds like your clutch was only partially releasing (causing the earlier grinding), & now it's not releasing at all - there's probably nothing wrong with the transmission itself.
How is the clutch fluid level? If it's OK, bleeding the clutch hydraulics may fix the problem.
But this era of truck (with hydraulic clutches installed), was prone to flexing & cracking the firewall where the clutch master cylinder mounts, which reduced the clutch action; as this got worse, shifting was affected.
Reinforcement plates for the firewall are used to fix the problem.......but you might only need to bleed your system, or perhaps renew the master/slave cylinders.
Please have a look at the four fingered plastic bushing that holds the master cylinder pushrod to the actuating arm, and the bushings up inside the pedal support that cross over from the clutch pedal itself.
Often these pieces wear out and you will be unable to fully disengage the clutch.
To look for firewall flex or tearing, have someone depress the clutch while you look from under the hood to see if the master cylinder is moving up and down.
