I have a 1992 F-150, and have lost the third speed on the fan. It works fine on Low, the second setting, and High. When I select the third position, the fan speed doesn't increase from the second position. The center two switch positions provide the same fan speed.
The motor runs, so I've ruled that out, and I don't believe it's related to the vacuum side of the HVAC system. Other than the fan switch itself, is there anywhere else I should be looking? Your input is appreciated.
Look at your switch. The resistor pack in the plenum has all the resistors wired in series with taps for each fan speed (except high), if you lost any one of the resistors in that circuit then you wouldn't have Low speed available.
I just stumbled upon this thread and I am asking this question for my 1992...I think I have a similar problem. Where can I find the resistors? Maybe I'm getting confused with the plenum for the motor. Is there also a plenum for the fan/blower?
Follow the wire back from the blower motor.
You will see a plug attached to a piece of circuit board screwed into the plastic plenum.
The resistor coils are mounted to the inside of this, so they are cooled by airflow.
It's right there in your pic.. it's the grey plastic thing mounted on the ductwork with wires coming out of it...maybe 6-8" to the right of the blower motor.
