Bad Trans fluid temp sensor? Code pic
My 98 expy 5.4 sets off a p1728 trans code intermittently after about 20 miles of driving. I can usually prolong the issue if it turn od off.
I dont thing the problem in mechanical because its intermittent. Could it be a bad TRT sensor? Valve body? TRS sensor?

Yes, yes, and yes, or the tranny could actually be slipping.
A trouble code is just a starting point, it is not a tell all problem solver. With the code in hand you have a starting point but you still have to do further diagnostics to determine the actual problem.

where do you recommend i start testing first? Where can i find the procedures to testing the components?

The very first time my od light started flashing was when I went to merge on a freeway ,I floored it and immediately had to let off the gas. Im not sure if that screwed up the valve body.

If you're going to attempt this yourself, I suggest that you first get a factory service manual. The pinpoint tests for automatic transmissions are extensive and it's highly unlikely you'll find them online. Check eBay for the manual, often you can pick up used ones for cheap.
