Do our trucks have 2 or 3? (one to the cooler and back). Which one is the most likely to fail, the pressure line or the one that has been known to rub on the shock mount, or are they the same line?
I am still putting together spare parts for remote travel and would like to carry the one that is known to fail the most.
The pressure line from the ps pump for the hydroboost is the one I have blown 3 times. It has a retaining clip that holds the line in the fitting where it connects to the pump. The retainer wears thin and the hose blows out of the fitting. You cannot replace the clip so you must replace the line. I do not know for sure if the line is the same from 4x4 to 2wd but I would hazard a guess that they are. In over 400k miles I have blown that line 3 times the others I have never had an issue with.
Have you considered installing short pieces of abrasion protection sleeves over your current power steering lines at the rub points?
Yes, I already did that a few years ago. After some research I found out that particular hose that rubs the shock tower IS the HP one, but the most likely cause of failure is not abrasion: http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/10...ring-line.html
Count me in the camp who has never experienced a C-Clip fitting failure (yet). It is interesting to read at least one person's saga about how the original hose lasted for a couple hundred thousand miles, while the user installed, aftermarket sourced. less costly substitutes needed repeated replacement after much shorter intervals.
If I ever do have to replace this line, I would first make certain to use the dimensionally calibrated, graduated diameter special tool to install a new Teflon ring seal over the fitting, following Ford's instruction. Secondly, I would only buy the new hose and seals from Ford. After all, this is brakes and steering we are talking about. Might as well try and keep liability under one brand name, rather than sharing the finger pointing love. About 12 years ago I obtained a new power steering hose from Ford to have on hand for this application (haven't had to use it yet), and it came from Ford with the white Teflon ring seals already installed onto the fittings. That might be useful to know, for those seeking replacements.
Where did you get one for $75.oo from Ford. I priced them out local and one was 200 something and the other 400 something. Didn't call AutoNation because I believe it's the hydroboost on mine. Hope to do it this weekend.

Hemborg Ford said the on that goes from the Hydro boost to the gear box is $426.oo .
And the other one was 200 something. I know the part house was 75 and I believe 65 for the other one, AZ. The hydro boost was $519.oo I believe there and I got it at AutoNation for $340.oo . I wanted the Ford one so I bit the bullet. That's the only place I could see fluid. The lines seemed okay. I hope I was right.
Holy *****! If mine ever goes out I'll take it to a hydraulics shop and have it custom fabbed before I spend $300+ on an OEM one. That is nuts!
I'm with you Caedo. My irish replacement line lasted as long as (within 5,000miles) as my OEM so I can't justify the added expense of OEM in this case. I got about 170K each out of the 2 that blew and have about 75K on the one thats in there now. If any line was more than $100 I would have a hydro shop make it for me.
Since the lines are that expensive, don't forget to add protection!
As you can see below, I slit some robust, fiber lined, heat resistant Goodyear Made in USA heater hose and slipped the slit hose over the steering lines.
Here's what it looks like today, over 13 years later. (View looking down from above, items of interest are black hose sheaths):
