new alternator, same problem

installed a new alternator but still the same problem. I was told to take a wire and touch it to the positive battery terminal from the middle wire on the plug that plugs into the alternator.. it works and makes my alternator work but I have to do that every time I start my truck

My diagrams do not show a yellow/black going to the alternator on a 96. It shows;

black/orange-output wire

yellow/white-voltage reference wire

lightgreen/red-charge trigger wire

white/black-jumper wire for stator

What was the original issue? Im assuming no charge? Have you checked the main fuse between the alt and bat?

The wire touch thing stems from the DC generator era when the field coil required polarizing.

Touching the field wire to the bat + will throw the alternator systems to wide open charge and make it work.
