2 questions folks...
how do i figure backspace and wheel offset ????? and how do i get the steering box off of the pitman arm ????? I dont want to do any damage by trying to beat the damn thing off of the gear box.....thanks all !!!!!
Here's a good chart that lets you do the calculation. And you use a pitman arm puller to get it off the sector shaft. Napa, Harbor Freight, and others sell them. Stu
Trying to figure offset is a pain. If you have any wheels for it currently, I would just mount them up and measure from there. See what the offset is, then measure what your clearances are between the frame and inside of the tire/rim, as well as how far you are from sticking out of the fender. Make your decisions based on those measurements.
When figuring front offset be sure to take into account clearance on the inside when the wheel is turned fully in both directions (you don't want the tire rubbing on the frame or suspension parts) and allow for suspension movement. The wheel does not only move up and down, but the axle rocks as well.
Many of the big box parts stores loan tools for free, or a two jaw puller is pretty cheap and useful. Remove the shaft nut and soak the sector shaft and pitman arm a couple times a day for a few days with a good penetrating oil like Liquid Wrench or PbBlaster (NOT WD40!). Replace the nut but leave it loose when using the puller so it doesn't slap you in the face or drop on your foot. Tighten the puller fairly tight, and if the arm doesn't come right off, with tension on the puller give the puller bolt a sharp whack with a ball peen hammer and it should pop off. remove the nut and the arm.
