6r80 fluid too high?

I had my 2010 6R80 serviced at he dealer last week (pan dropped fluid and filter). Today after a 10min drive i climbed underneath to check the level. With the truck off i backed off the 19mm nut and started to remove it when fluid immediately started overflowing from it. It stopped after loosing about a 1/2 cup and by checking the dip stick it was evident that the fluid was right to the top of the fill hole. I did not start the truck to check it while running as your suppose to because i was worried it would continue to overflow and make a mess. My question is should i continue to check it running? Does the level drop when it is running or will it rise and puke out more? I am thinking it is way too high and i am gonna return to the dealership but dont want to jump the gun if checking while running will drop the level down to be within the hash marks.
Thanks

Thank you for this. I am yet to check out where the fill plugs and whatnot are under my truck, but hear that the transmission plug is positioned perfectly for you to burn the snot out of yourself when hot.

Thanks, but $183 at Summit Racing...ouch. I'll take my chances with burns. I have an extra heat shield blanket rated for 2000F, probably will position that to protect myself while checking the fluid.

I hate the fact that almost none of these vehicles have dip stick anymore.

They're designed for the average idiot that would add the wrong fluid or snake oil products.

^^ That's a fact. It just sucks for those of us who want to change our own fluids/filters and intend on using Ford's fluids.

As others have said, you're doing it wrong. I've never had a transmission that won't read REALLY high when the engine is off; my understanding is that the torque converter drains into the pan when the pump isn't turning. You need to start the truck THEN check the fluid level with the transmission up to temp.

ok thanks i will try again, it was my intention to remove the cap with the truck off then start it and go back under to check it. I got rattled when it was so full with the engine off. I guess it will go down with the engine running i was worried about the opposite. i assume that i also should make sure that i get the cap seated back on before shutting the engine off as hot fluid may rise above the fill hole as it drains back with the engine off?
thanks again

Hold on a minute.

The traditional method of checking trans fluid is to do it with the engine running, vehicle in park, trans hot, level, etc. However, that is "always" (?) noted on the dipstick. I'm saying I've always seen it that way, maybe Ford screwed up on this one.

I've seen a video of someone checking the level of a 6r60, and the dipstick, as small as it was, noted to check it with the engine idling. My dipstick does not say this. Nowhere in the image above does it state to have the engine idling. It says to have it hot, level, but no mention of idling. Go ahead, read it again. The dipstick just says "see service manual", just like mine does.

I drained about 5.5 quarts from mine and put 6.5 back in, checking it with the engine running. It still doesn't reach the bottom of the stick. Checking it with the engine off, it's now at the highest point.

Has anyone seen the actual ford service instructions for the 6r80?
