Clunking/Bumps

So I have an issue with my 03 f150, Basically It clunks in various scenarioss such as Accelerating also occurs take off and general breaking/slowing down but not really when stopping. December when it was cold and I was deacelerating(not on the break just coasting) it feels like i was driving on the shoulder.

It does it much more in cold weather. Just had the truck out getting a little rough with it for 5 or so hours today and 0 issues with it.

I was thinking it was a slip yoke issue that I hear allot of trucks have the issue but I was at the dealership today and both guys and a mechanic sitting there were like "never had that issue on an 03 f150, might be your back end." They also stated the clunking would always occur and be more prominent when breaking which its not.

I am certain its not the transmission its not occurring with any shift point.

Dealer said it would be $99 to diagnose it. Kind of hard to do it if its hard to reproduce in the heat.

I had a similar issue with my 94 f150, and the issue was loose u-bolts on the leaf springs.

Yea definitely check your Ubolts and see if everything is torqued down properly. Also check your leaf spring eye bushings. They could be worn out and you could have things banging around because of that.

Are you able to pin point where it may be coming from? Front or rear?

I did not find any play in anything. Another question though is would the shock absorbs do it if they were bad.

Also with it off the ground the diff seemed to have all so slight play where I could move the tire like a fraction of an inch without the other tire/driveshaft moving. Otherwise everything was rock solid.

[edit2]

So I Strapped my dashcam to the leafspring to see what I could get or get it to clunk. I didn't notice it after the time but after watching the video I noticed a single clunk here. That sounds almost like what I hear when I feel the clunk however I have no idea if it was the same thing as I have not been able to reproduce the issue at all.

I'll do a diff fluid change next weekend and use the chance to look for any issues in it such as metal shavings

Two things to check off the list, and I've had both happen ( 2 different F-150's though ). Separated motor mount on one, and a broken sway bar link on the other. Both clunked and knocked through the frame, so It could take some careful testing.

slip yoke lube fixed it

Just had my 1997 F150 4x4, 87K miles in the shop for the "clunking" on start and decel. Thought it was the rear diff, limited slip wear and tear...nope. It was a super dry and sticking slip yoke, where the drive shaft enters the transmission. Needed disassembly and packed with grease. My Ford dealer charged $150 for the work. Happy it is fixed right.

I was at the dealer when I had fuel/radiator flush/cleaning the guy said they had not seen or heard of the issue being the slip yoke on my particular year and configuration. They said it was common on 2004+ or 97-2003 with the 4x4 but not on my truck. There were a couple technicians sitting there too at the time who said they never saw the slip yoke issue on 2003 non 4x4.
