My buddy has an Early '99 PSD, and sometimes it can be a real bear to start. The other day it stopped running, and he found it massively low on oil, about 8 quarts or so. He filled it back up, ran it for about 35 minutes idling, and he found it was 4 quarts low again.
I'm thinking there is no way that engine could run if it were actually burning 4 quarts of oil in 35 minutes, so the oil has to be going somewhere. From searching, it seems like the #1 culprit would be bad injector o-rings. Could bad o-rings allow that much oil to go into the fuel system, and have the engine still run?
I'm going to have him check the fuel bowl this weekend to see if the filter is black.
Bad injector O-rings could be a start, but if he's going through that much it's probably going to be a combination of several things. If the injector O-rings are leaking you will usually notice blue smoke on start up or while running.
Could also be loose crank case bolts, leaking dipstick, leaking HPOP gasket, leaking EBPV actuator. An excessively dirty air filter an also contribute to oil consumption. I'm sure there's some other possibilities too.
If there's no external leaks and he's going through a gallon of oil in half an hour, there should be a blue cloud surrounding the truck.
Maybe the first 8 qrts didn't completely top it off, or maybe not all the oil settled back into the crank case when you determined it was another 4 low?
