Front differential noise

2003 F250 SD, 6L diesel, Automatic trans, 4x4
Last night my friend was giving me a ride from our job site on the beach to the parking lot. When we got to the concrete the truck didn't properly disengage from 4wd and there was a loud clunk from the right front side. Now when it's in 4wd it makes a popping sound while the front of the truck kind of hops.
Any feedback what to inspect first?

sounds like a broken universal in the front axle.

I also think universal or axle. My buddy who I plow for snapped a front axle coming from snow to pavement because his front end bound up and then let go way to violently.
