grinding sound from axle
my truck is a 78 F-150 4x4 . My rear axle was making a grinding noise whenever I let off the gas. It was getting louder and louder until one day it suddenly clunked and quit working. I put in a used rear axle and it was fine now I think this axle is starting to do it. What is causing this? The diff has fluid in it, is it maybe bearings? Anyway thanks for any help.

You are either one unlucky soul or your extremely hard on your poor truck or maybe both! Serously though...it sounds like bearings but hard to know for sure from here. Does either backing plate get hot after you have driven the truck? If so that may indicate bearing failure on that axle. Does the noise appear intermittent or does the noise change while driving speed is varied. Maybe you can describe this a little more. You should also jack the truck up and turn the wheels by hand to try and isolate where the noise is coming from. You may find that you only hear it when passenger wheel turns for instance.
