Bought a 1988 Bronco II. Runs great, no smoke.
Trans was a little noisy in 1-2-3 gears. Pulled drain plug. Automatic fluid came out. On identifying this trans, it is an FM146, with transfer case.(center drain plug)
Put 80-90W gear oil back in.
Question- u think bearings are shot because of Trans fluid?
Yep, the FM145/FM146 used gear oil. Previous owner probably thought it was an M5OD, which uses ATF.
Hard to say whether there's been damage. Is the drain plug magnetic and if so, did you see anything ugly? How does the tranny sound and perform with gear oil?
